How the light works at Villa Isla Blanca
The villa faces the Caribbean, so the sun rises over the water and sets behind the property on the lagoon side. On this coast that means a late afternoon ceremony falls into open shade well before the official sunset time, and the sky over the ocean turns soft pink and blue rather than dropping a sun into the sea. A ceremony beginning roughly 90 minutes before sunset leaves usable light for portraits afterwards, because twilight arrives quickly once the sun drops behind the land. The rooftop terrace holds the last open sky on the property and is the natural place to be as the light goes. After dark the setting is genuinely dark, since the coastline is undeveloped and the house runs on solar with a backup generator, so reception lighting is a production decision rather than something the surroundings supply.
The best time to start your ceremony
Arch's own rule for this coast is to begin the ceremony about 90 minutes before sunset, which leaves the vows in soft light and still keeps time for portraits afterwards. Start times are rounded down to the half hour. Costa Mujeres, Quintana Roo. UTC-5 all year: the state left daylight saving in 2015. Times are town level, so they run within a couple of minutes of the property.
