07Light and timing

How the light works at Paradisus Cancun

The resort sits on the north to south leg of the hotel zone at km 16.5, with the Nichupte Lagoon on one side and the Caribbean on the other, so the beach and the gazebo look east over the water. That orientation shapes everything about an afternoon ceremony here. The sun drops behind the resort and the lagoon rather than into the sea, so the beach falls into soft open shade while the sky over the water stays bright, and nobody is squinting through their vows. The trade-off is that you will not get the sun sinking into the ocean behind you; you get the pastel gradient of pinks and blues that defines the Caribbean look instead. Light also goes quickly once the sun clears the buildings, so a ceremony roughly ninety minutes before official sunset leaves enough room for family groups and couple portraits before twilight.

The best time to start your ceremony

Arch's own rule for this coast is to begin the ceremony about 90 minutes before sunset, which leaves the vows in soft light and still keeps time for portraits afterwards.
