07Light and timing

How the light works at Papaya Playa Project

This is an east facing Caribbean coast, so the sun rises over the water and sets behind the jungle rather than into the sea. In practice the beach and the chapel fall into open shade in the late afternoon while the sky above the water stays bright, which is flattering for a ceremony and means nobody is squinting through their vows. The trade off is that the sky turns pastel over the ocean instead of giving you a sun into water sunset, and the light goes quickly once the sun drops behind the tree line. A Riviera Maya ceremony starting about 90 minutes before official sunset leaves room for family groups and couple portraits before that happens. The rooftop, with 360 degree views over the sea and the jungle, is the one place on the property that looks back toward where the sun actually sets.

The best time to start your ceremony

Arch's own rule for this coast is to begin the ceremony about 90 minutes before sunset, which leaves the vows in soft light and still keeps time for portraits afterwards.
