How the light works here

The resort sits on the east-facing Caribbean shore, so the sun rises over the water and sets behind the jungle and the resort buildings rather than over the sea. That geography works in your favour during the vows: the beach falls into open shade in the late afternoon while the sky stays bright, so nobody squints and skin tones stay soft and even well before the official sunset time. The trade is that you will not get the sun sinking into the water behind you. What you get instead is a pastel gradient of pink and blue over the Caribbean, and a blue hour where shallow turquoise water and white sand keep glowing after the sun has gone. Light disappears quickly once the sun clears the tree line, which is why a ceremony starting around ninety minutes before sunset leaves room for family groups and couple portraits.

The best time to start your ceremony

Arch's own rule for this coast is to begin the ceremony about 90 minutes before sunset, which leaves the vows in soft light and still keeps time for portraits. Start times are rounded to the half hour for these coordinates. Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo. UTC-5 all year: the state left daylight saving in 2015. Times are town level, so they run within a couple of minutes of the property.

BeachEast, open Caribbean in front of the resortFalls into open shade late in the day while the sky stays bright, so skin tones stay soft and even well before official sunset. What you get behind you is a pastel pink and blue gradient over the water rather than a sun sinking into it, and the shallow turquoise water and white sand keep glowing through blue hour.
Family TerraceOpen terrace, sold on its sunset viewsThe one space on the property marketed on the sunset rather than on the water, so it looks the other way from the beach and keeps bright sky in frame as the light goes. Booking partners list it as Daisy Terrace.
Lagoon GazeboInland, beside the resort lagoonWater in the frame, but the lagoon rather than the Caribbean. Set low among the resort grounds, so it goes into shade with everything else at ground level while the sky over the sea is still bright.
