How the light works here

The ceremony sites all look out on the open Caribbean, and because this coast faces east the sun climbs out of the water in the morning and drops behind the resort and its golf course in the evening. There is no over water sunset here to build a ceremony around, so the move is a late afternoon ceremony roughly two hours before sundown, when the light softens and the beach loses its midday contrast. Midday portraits are workable but need shade, and the sea grape groves at the edge of the sand are the best of it, giving open shade a few steps from the ceremony chairs. The rooms we have worked in are a real asset for getting ready coverage, with floor to ceiling windows behind sheer curtains, pale walls and light stone floors that give clean directional window light without bringing in strobes.

The best time to start your ceremony

Arch's own rule for this coast is to begin the ceremony about 90 minutes before sunset, which leaves the vows in soft light and still keeps time for portraits. Start times are rounded to the half hour for these coordinates. Cancun hotel zone, Quintana Roo. UTC-5 all year: the state left daylight saving in 2015. Times are town level, so they run within a couple of minutes of the property.
