How the light works here

This is the east coast of Mexico, so the sun rises over the Caribbean and sets behind the jungle. By late afternoon the beach and the inlet fall into open shade while the sky stays bright, which is why nobody squints through their vows here and why the sky over the water goes pastel rather than fiery. We generally want the ceremony starting about ninety minutes before official sunset, because once the sun drops behind the tree line twilight arrives fast and portrait time goes with it. The Todos los Angeles Chapel sits at the top of the Xpiral Pyramid with a 180 degree view of the sea, so it holds light longer than anything at ground level and is worth protecting in the timeline. Cuevas Kayak is a cave: dark stone, no natural light to speak of, and entirely dependent on what gets rigged into it, so lighting there is a design decision rather than an afterthought.

The best time to start your ceremony

Arch's own rule for this coast is to begin the ceremony about 90 minutes before sunset, which leaves the vows in soft light and still keeps time for portraits.
