Arrival, and where you get ready

6.2Then drive: Cancun International is about 50 minutes north by car and Tulum about 30 minutes south. The hotel arranges private car transfers for a charge, and a 25 minute helicopter transfer lands on property.
6.3Arriving at: Xpu-Ha, midway between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. It is a 50-acre former private estate rather than an address on a resort strip.
6.4Tell guests: Nothing is within walking distance. Anyone who wants a night out in Playa del Carmen or Tulum needs a car or a transfer booked ahead.
6.5At the airport: Ignore anyone offering a ride between the arrivals door and the curb, however official they look. Only pre-arranged and federally authorized transport may pick up at the terminal, and the walk-up offers are where the overcharge stories come from. Ride-hailing apps work for the trip back to the airport but are unreliable for arrivals, so do not plan a pickup around one.

07Light and timing

How the light works at Hotel Esencia

This is the east-facing Caribbean coast, so the sun rises over the water at Xpu-Ha and sets behind the jungle. That geometry works in your favour for an evening ceremony: by late afternoon the beach and the Palm Garden fall into open shade while the sky stays bright, so nobody squints and skin tones stay soft. What you do not get is a sun dipping into the sea behind you. Instead the sky over the water turns pastel, the classic Caribbean look. A ceremony starting roughly 90 minutes before official sunset leaves room for portraits before the light goes, because twilight arrives quickly once the sun drops behind the tree line. The Main House steps face into the property with the brick pathway and archway framing the shot, so they hold light differently from the open beach and are worth a separate visit at the same hour you plan to use them.

The best time to start your ceremony

Arch's own rule for this coast is to begin the ceremony about 90 minutes before sunset, which leaves the vows in soft light and still keeps time for portraits afterwards. Start times are rounded down to the half hour. Riviera Maya, Quintana Roo. UTC-5 all year: the state left daylight saving in 2015. Times are town level, so they run within a couple of minutes of the property.
