07Light and timing

How the light works at Hard Rock Hotel Cancun

The resort has open water on two sides, and that governs the whole day. The beach looks east to the Caribbean, so sunrise is the only time the water itself is backlit, and it is the right slot for quiet portraits on the sand before the property wakes up. Sunset falls behind the resort over the Cancun lagoon, which means late-day beach coverage is soft open shade rather than sun over water, and the strongest colour of the evening sits on the lagoon side of the property. Scheduling the ceremony a couple of hours before sunset buys golden-hour portrait light and a cooler reception for everyone. After dark the picture changes again: outdoor functions have to end by 10:30 pm, so the last hours move into the ballrooms, which are lit rooms with no open sky and want a lighting plan rather than available light.

The best time to start your ceremony

Arch's own rule for this coast is to begin the ceremony about 90 minutes before sunset, which leaves the vows in soft light and still keeps time for portraits afterwards.
