07Light and timing

How the light works at Etéreo, Auberge Resorts Collection

Etéreo faces east onto the Caribbean, which means the sun comes up over the water and goes down inland behind the mangroves. The practical effect is that the beach and the Resol lawn drop into open shade through the late afternoon while the sky over the ocean stays bright, so nobody is squinting through the vows and the light on skin turns soft well before official sunset. The trade is speed. Once the sun clears the tree line, twilight arrives fast and the portrait window is short, which is why a ceremony start around 90 minutes before sunset works so well on this coast. Ixchel's outdoor terrace floats above the vegetation and is the one space the resort itself describes as facing the sunset, while the pier over the water is the setting the events team singles out for that hour.

The best time to start your ceremony

Arch's own rule for this coast is to begin the ceremony about 90 minutes before sunset, which leaves the vows in soft light and still keeps time for portraits afterwards.
