How the light works here
The beaches at both Riviera Maya locations open east onto the Caribbean, which sets the whole shape of the day. Morning light comes clean off the water and the sun tracks behind the palapas as the afternoon goes on, so by the last hour before sunset it arrives low and warm over the treeline and rakes across the sand instead of glaring off the sea. That final hour is what couples build the timeline around, and in the winter months it means an early evening ceremony. Sunset itself drops inland behind the jungle rather than over the water, so the picture to plan for is the two of you on the sand with warm light behind and the sea going deep blue, not a sun sitting on the horizon.
The best time to start your ceremony
Arch's own rule for this coast is to begin the ceremony about 90 minutes before sunset, which leaves the vows in soft light and still keeps time for portraits. Start times are rounded to the half hour for these coordinates. Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo. UTC-5 all year: the state left daylight saving in 2015. Times are town level, so they run within a couple of minutes of the property.
