Arrival, and where you get ready

6.3Arriving at: Km 51 of the Cancun to Tulum highway, roughly 20 minutes north of Playa del Carmen.

How the light works at Belmond Maroma

Maroma faces east onto the Caribbean, so the sun rises over the water and sets behind the jungle side of the property. A beach ceremony on Pescados therefore gets soft, indirect late-afternoon light rather than sun dropping into the sea behind the couple, and it warms up as the sun falls behind the palms. Sunset itself reads best from El Mirador, the rooftop terrace above Casa Mayor that the hotel describes as poised where the sky meets the ocean. Ka'ax Garden sits in jungle at the heart of the property and Las Ranas wraps a fountain courtyard by the main lobby, so both hold shade longer than the open sand and are workable earlier in the afternoon. Palapa Tolok is the only all-weather room, with floor-to-ceiling windows onto the foliage and a 1,056 sq ft deck built for dancing under the stars, which makes it the natural anchor after dark and in bad weather.

The best time to start your ceremony

Arch's own rule for this coast is to begin the ceremony about 90 minutes before sunset, which leaves the vows in soft light and still keeps time for portraits afterwards.
